Although my understanding of the CNFS is incomplete, is it not the case
that there really isn't a way to determine which is the oldest article
in the buffer?

Isn't this because the allocation mapping used simply reallocates space
as it's needed, depending on a lookup failure to indicate that an
article (that might still be listed as being in the buf by the history
file) has actually been overwritten?

It would be nice if the allocator could extract some information about
an old article about to be overwritten before that happens, but my quick
glance at the code didn't reveal an easy way to add that functionality.
It sure would be nice to have, though.
