Just as on your secondary server, the root domain should be "type hint",
not "type master" -- you are not the primary server for the root domain.
And it sounds like you have some bogus stuff in your db.root.

Is this a Sun?  There's a known bug in BIND 8.2 on Suns that causes this
message when you restart named.  Install patch 1 or upgrade to BIND 8.2.1.
Until then, remove /etc/ndc before restarting named.
