named dies when out of memory?

BIND 8.2.1 on an SGI IRIX 6.2.  named dies when it runs out of
memory!  We tried setting a memory limit, but it seems to then
die when it reaches that limit.

Is this supposed to happen?  Is there anything we can do?  (The
machine probably does enough name resolving that it will manage
to use up as much RAM as we can give it, it's just a matter of
how long.  There must be a better way...?)
