CNAME records work the same in BIND 8.x as BIND 4.9.x.  Could you be more
specific about the problems you're having?

You're not trying to put the CNAME record on the domain name, are you?
foo.com can't be a CNAME, but www.foo.com can.  If you want to allow
foo.com as well, you should make it an A record.
