No, it wouldn't need to convert into dotted decimal format first.
The output looks the same in hex (and hence binary). It is simply
converting the longer number into the same thing as it would have
converted the decimal number into. The binary representation of the 2
shows up the same. The dots are just a parsing issue. So, in hex they
look the same.
