I tried installing the 'patch', and got this (assuming you are talking about
patch4):

Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: master zone "0.0.127.IN-ADDR.ARPA" (IN)
loaded
 (serial 19991101)
Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: Zone "surfarinet.com" (file
db.surfarinet.com)
: multiple SOA RRs found
Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: slave zone "surfarinet.com" (IN)
rejected due
to errors (serial 19991103)
Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: Zone "surfari.net" (file
db.surfari.net): mult
iple SOA RRs found
Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: slave zone "surfari.net" (IN) rejected

Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: Zone "135.114.207.IN-ADDR.ARPA" (file
db.207.1
14.135.0): multiple SOA RRs found
Nov 11 11:58:01 jumbo named[18253]: slave zone "135.114.207.IN-ADDR.ARPA"
(IN) rej
ected due to errors (serial 19991101)

I just downloaded the source files directly from isc.org (wanted to make
sure I didn't mess something up). I tried manually editing named-xfer.c by
hand (just changing the one line as indicated in the patch), no change in
the operating of my secondary server (gives same messages as below).

I must be missing something *real* simple, thanks in advance for any
suggestions/advice.
