      Sorry about that. The OS is Univel 1.1 which is a very early
version of Sys V 4.2 that SCO is/was distributing. We are using 8.1.1
bind.

The search list on Unix systems and similar systems can be set by
changing it inside the /etc/resolv.conf file.  I understand that modern
resolvers do not behave the way you are describing, so perhaps you
should download the latest BIND and install the newer resolver shared
object libraries (*.so files).

Oh, you never did say what kind of system you were using, did you?  ;-)
