There are a couple examples for you.
In one instance you want your secondary DNS server to update.
You can't have an "A" record and a "SOA" record with the same domain and have
the secondary name server update correctly. If you are trying to save time
by using cnames instead of IP addresses well guess what use A records.
If you are using sendmail you still do not need "CNAME" records. If your
mail server is bimbo.server.com then you should have an "A" record for the
the mail server. Lets say you have bonehead.com your MX records for
bonehead.com should look like this.
bonehead.com. IN MX 10 bimbo.server.com.
