8.2.1 will not compile on Red Hat 6.0: ld returned exit 1 status

Boy, do I feel dumb.  The problem is, I was out of disk space.  That's
what I get for trying to build in /root instrad of /usr/src.

Sorry for the waste of bandwidth.

OTOH, that error message could have been a bit more informative...
