DNS in a nutshell

You could tell machines to directly query the ISP's name servers, or you
could configure a local server for the domain or just to cache and
forward requests to the ISP's nameserver or to the root servers.
Some FTP, HTTP, and other servers require the ability to map your
machines' ip address back to a name.
