The beauty of doing things with these standards is that there are many
"right" ways of doing things.  Some people use FQDNs for accuracy.
Others do not have quite as catalogue-oriented a mindset, and prefer
simple names.  BIND allows room for both.

The "better" way for doing what that group wanted was, in fact, search
lists in the resolvers.  ;-)
