Sorry, I do not get it.  What is it with ldap and active directory that is disturbing you?
ldap is simply an access method to a 'directory', kinda like SQL is for a database.
Regarding the EBCDIC comment:  Well, Al Gore invented the Internet, so why could ms not (re)invent ebcdic :-)
