if you edited the hosts file with notepad it will append a .txt extension
this will make it not work. Also you must close down any open browser
window before it will work (caches resolver results)

hope this helps,

Tobias

Subject: Can anyone explain this

I have just registered a domain name that is directed to a holding page on
the register company's web server. I want to move the domain to a 'real'
web server and have set up an account in readiness to change the name
servers over to the 'real' server. I can see the zone file on the real
server and it is correct.

Now the question... I thought that if I put an entry into my windows HOST
file with the 'real' servers IP address, when I try and access the page I
should get the real web server - I do not I still get the original register
companies holding page.

I have a program that will look at zone files and also get an IP address
from domain names, this program reads the HOST file and returns the IP for
the real server but I.E. still returns the holding page, even after a
'refresh'. It looks like I.E. is ignoring the HOST file altogether (by the
way it is actually named host i.e. lower case).

Does anyone know why ????

By the way, I cannot give you the real domain name and IP addresses as I
have started the process on changing the name servers and by the time you
read this it will be (hopefully) finished.

Regards Terry.
