Use 'dig mx @your-DNS-host mymail.com' to find the MX record for
mymail.com. That will tell you which system(s) mymail.com is using for
e-mail gateways.

Subject: Calculating SMTP server from email address

Many email addresses are of the form:

john at mymail.com
peter at yourmail.com

but the "host" name after the "@" symbol is often not a registered DNS
name. Often, the SMTP server name is:

smtp.mymail.com
smtp.yourmail.com
or
mail.mymail.com

Is there an easy way of finding out what the SMTP server DNS name is
from the email address? Should I just look at the leaf nodes of any
given DNS name and look for "smtp" or "mail"? Is there a convention?

Thanks

Alan
