This is NOT the problem.  There is always an implicit "$ORIGIN" from
the domain declared in the zone "..." { ... }; statement.

It is possible that the /etc/resolv.conf on the machine from which he
is doing his testing points to 127.0.0.1 ... but that is not the
machine from which he is serving DNS.  ;-/  At least, that is a
reasonable scenario, having given it only brief thought.  ;-}  [Been
out sick for a couple of days, have to catch up, but I couldn't let
this pass unanswered.]
