Fwd: Can Bind 8 Listen On My Modem IP Address?

Yes you are absolutely correct that I need a full-time server, preferably
with a DSL connection. I wish I could afford both! Of the 4 computers here 1
belongs to a client and 2 belong to my wife, who would not appreciate my
turning them into Linux boxes. The 4th is my personal machine which
dual-boots both Red Hat Linux and Windows 98. The Linux OS is what powers my
shiny new domain. I would go over to Linux entirely, and leave it connected
to the internet 24X7, but there are still applications on my Windows OS that
I don't have in Linux. I'm also rather afraid of what my ISP Clark.net (now
part of Verio.com) would say if I stay connected to a 56K dialup line 24
hours a day. So my approach is to bring up Linux and connect to the net as
much as I can at this time.

Bob

If your PPP connection is not up, the IP address is not in effect, and
'named' will not bind to it.

This is also a problem for anyone outside your LAN trying to reach you.
If your only name server is only available when YOU dial in, then it
can't be reached by other people when THEY want to find you - e.g., to
return e-mail. You need a full-time slave server.
