A faster timeout is not the answer. You need to get to the cause of why the
query isn't being resolved properly. A name in an unknown domain should
either be answered authoritatively by your internal root servers that it
doesn't exist, or forwarded externally. It should *not* be timing out. That
is *not* good.

You're not using an Internet hints file with no direct Internet connectivity
and no forwarding, are you? That would force your poor nameservers to waste
a lot of time and effort whenever they try to resolve names in unknown
domains.
