nslookup can't find my domain

hi all,

i've separated the internal and external DNS resolution by running two
named (version 8.2.2.p5) processes listening on different interfaces
(external and internal).

i've also noticed that while running nslookup and just typing my domain,
usls.edu, gives me:

[03:19pm] [root at atlas /root]# nslookup
Default Server:  atlas.usls.edu
Address:  192.168.1.1

> usls.edu
Server:  atlas.usls.edu
Address:  192.168.1.1

*** atlas.usls.edu can't find usls.edu: Non-existent host/domain

even if i change servers (other external resolvers not within my domain),
the results are still the same. i also used my own external resolver but
got the same result.

but the external resolver happily resolves other domains (i.e. yahoo.com):

	Non-authoritative answer:
	Name:    yahoo.com
	Addresses:  204.71.200.245, 204.71.200.243

but when i specify `set q=any', it spits out all possible information for
my domain. is this "normal" for a split DNS environment?
