If the RNAME field of the SOA record is ben.smith.cisco.com, then this
unambiguously maps to a an email address (mailbox name) of
ben at smith.cisco.com. The representation of ben.smith.cisco.com as a
mailbox name is quite clear: there's no "instead of". It just doesn't
happen to be what you want. An email address of ben.smith at cisco.com
can be obtained by preceding the first dot with a backslash so that
the DNS treats it as three labels - "ben.smith", "cisco" and "com" -
and the at sign goes between the first and second labels.
