To put this into a bit of perspective:

- a touch under 100,000 separate sites (by IP address) have downloaded the
BIND version 8.2.2-P5 package since it was released in November (over 30,000
since March).

- BIND version 9 BETA has been downloaded by over 3,000 sites (since
February).

However, as Bill pointed out, merely downloading means little when considering
actual use.

> hundreds of people have joined the mailing list;

Another meaningless metric.

% wc -l bind-users/users
1620
% wc -l bind9-users/users
226

Of course, most of the entries in the bind{,9}-users lists are exploders and
bind-users is also gatewayed to news, so it is a bit difficult to know how
many people are actually receiving bind-users messages.
