Aliases don't work?

Hi,

I installed a name server to take some pressure off the link
between our two locations, and I'm having a strange problem with
it: it is looking up adresses (A records) correctly (e.g.
aint-it-cool-news.com), but it fails on aliases (CNAME records,
e.g. www.aint-it-cool-news.com). When I try to look up the
latter, it just says 'can't find www.aint-it-cool-news.com:
Non-existent host/domain'.

Can anyone point me in the general direction of the solution of
this problem? Thanks!
