Confused on Compile

I'm really sorry but I'm not a linux expert. I was kinda thrown into the
position I'm in now.

Either way, I'd like to upgrade to bind 8.5.5 p7 from p5 and the directions
are confusing to me as to what I should do.

I am running Red Hat Linux 6.1 I believe I have all the gcc stuff necessary.

I have bind installed in /opt/bind

How can I upgrade that version without messing up my zone files and my
named.conf file? What are the commands?

If I read the manual right I do:

make clean
make
make install

or something like that, but normally I do 'configure' before any make
commands so where's that? How to do I tell it what directory to install
into?
