I don't understand that, since the config you previously posted for ns2 didn't
mention "gaskill.net" at all, either as master or slave.

Not at all. Mixing master and slave zones is done all of the time. What matters is
that all of the machines you want to receive queries for the domain should be
authoritative (i.e. master or slave) and should be listed in the delegations for
the domain. You can have more than 2 delegated nameservers, by the way.
