They *will* be subdomains !
Where the names are used is irrelevant to the status as subdomains.

He can either delegate these as separate zones (potentially to
separate nameservers) or just add the relevant records directly into
the acompany.com zone.

That is pure web-wizardry (if at all) nd has nothingreally to with
DNS, once the relevant A records exists as described above.
