slave zone not behaving

I would worry, as his named complained that the name is not one of
his zones, when he had configured it and the notify came from the
correct master...

Have you checked whether your secondary has properly loaded the zone
or whether there were other errors loading it?

In the logfiles when it starts reloads. Make sure it loads OK before
checkig anything else.
