named cause defunct processes

Defunct processes don't consume CPU, so I think the defunct processes are a
*symptom* of your problem, rather than a cause. named is probably so busy
that it's falling behind on wait()'ing for its child processes.

As for the root cause, I have no idea. Perhaps you should turn on query
logging to see how much traffic you're actually getting. If it's a reasonable
amount, turning on debugging might help you determine whether some unusual
condition is causing "named" to consume an excessive amount of CPU. Is the
machine swapping?
