several products will register DHCP assigned addreses
in DNS. ISC dhcpd 3.0,Cisco Network Registrar,probably
many more I don't know about. You will want this if
you are moving to w2k.
Strictly speaking WINS was developed to map netbios names
to IP addresses. When the existance of the internet
supprised microsoft,IP was included with windows.
The old DLC netbios way of doing things was not a good
fit to an IP world. It had problems if you tried to
grow it too large. WINS was one way of dealing
with the problems.
If you have ever done multiple WINS servers and
"push-pull" replication,you will understand the
MS move to DNS as the current name resolution
method.
