for the hostname in question,

dig @a.gtld-servers.net www.mydomain.com a

to see if a vestigial A record isn't in the roots as part of an HOST 
registration that was forgotten about and not deleted.

ie, the roots are passing out the old A record they have as glue, 
rather than or in addition to the local DNS passing the new A record.
