Secondary(slave) Stuff!

Michele,

If the slave is a listed name server (has a NS record in the zone), a
version 8 and 9 master will send a notify once the zone is reloaded
(rndc/ndc) by default. If it is not listed (a stealth slave), then you use
'also-notify' on the master to force it to inform the slave that the zone
has changed and prompt a transfer. Once a zone transfer is complete, then it
will be available on the slave immediately.

The slave will always use the refresh interval to check for updates, the
refresh interval is reset on the notifies. Another note, you should be using
rndc/ndc to control the name server, and avoid issuing signals directly.

I have a related question. Once I increment the serial number on the master,
how long should the secondary take to increment? Does the secondary poll the
primary based upon the refresh value in the SOA data or is it constantly
polling and only updates based upon that value? Then, once the secondary
obtains the updated zone through a zone transfer, should it immediately
update or does it have to receive a SIGHUP?
