There are times when the "toolkit" approach is appropriate, and
there are times when the "toolkit" approach becomes more of a
"patchwork" approach and is no longer appropriate. I am in complete
agreement with Kevin on this issue -- djbdns is *way* too far down
the "patchwork" road, and depends on far too many other bits and
pieces to be filled in by other programs/packages, patches to be
provided from third parties to get important functionality, etc....

I've been in the trenches, too, since I got my start in doing
this sort of stuff in the very early 90's (something like 1991 or
1992). I still have yet to see something that can begin to approach
BIND in terms of the functionality needed to provide either
authoritative-only or caching-only nameservice, and with recent
versions of BIND, to be able to securely mix those two operations on
the same machine.

Morever, like Kevin, I've looked at a lot of "Complete DNS
Management Packages", and not one of them has had anywhere near all
the features that I think are necessary. There are some that are
okay for certain niches (QuickDNS and QuickDNS Manager are good for
the SOHO environment), and there are tools that at least make an
attempt to provide some starting functionality for broader
environments. But djbdns would faire very, very poorly when compared
to even just QuickDNS, much less most of the products listed at
<http://www.isc.org/products/BIND/vendorware.html>.
