question regarding SOA text format

Perhaps this is just my misunderstanding, and if so, I appologise if I
waste anyone's time-I just wish to be clear on something.

While referring to the 4th edition of _DNS_and_Bind_ by Albitz and Liu,
the reference section gave the text format for the SOA as a single-line
entry, but with the serial, refresh, retry, expire, and minimum values
in parenthesises. I understand that if the values for a resource record
extend beyond a single line parenthesises are required to continue the
entry, but this gives the impression that maybe they are required even
in a single line entry. I looked at RFC-1035, but could not find the
text format given, and the 3rd edition gave it as a two-line entry,
which would necessitate the use of parenthesises. Are they required, or
was this a carry-over from the 3rd edition?
