restarting named...takes a long long time ???

Do you use "-" in your syslog.conf to prevent sync'ing after
every message is logged? Assuming it is only logging every
successful load thats 4000 synchronous writes before we get to
errors and other stuff. The sync on syslog is a trade-off of
course, which you only regret if it crashes before logging -
although in my experience crashing is usually too quick to log
anything sync or no sync.

Even that doesn't explain the huge amount of time taken...

On a cheap laptop, Celeron 450MHz, 256Mb of memory, with
ReiserFS, and Mandrake 7.2 and single bog standard IDE disk I
see BIND 9.2.0rc1 load about 100 small zones a second for the
first few hundred zones.

What hardware are you running? Is it constrained by lack of
memory? Is it supplying recurive name resolution to any clients
(I'd hope not if serving 4000 zones).
