legal hostnames in zone files

Is it possible to have hostnames with underscores in the zone files? I'm
testing
8.2.3, and it seems to be having trouble loading zones with hostnames that
have underscores. When I take the underscores out, it seems to load okay.
But domain-wide, I have 287 systems with underscores in the hostname. It
would
suck to have to touch all these boxes and change them just to suit 8.2.3.

Still...if I have to....<sigh>. It just seems like I'm missing something.
