You could define the "appserv" name with both addresses, i.e. the address for
host1 and host2. Most nameserver implementations will
"round-robin" (alternate) the order in which the address list is given, thus
producing a rough load-balancing effect.

Smart clients will even fail over from one host to another in the case of a
failure.
