wildcards in the domain of an A resource record

Why? You don't ask for a wildcard RR, you ask for a specific one -
right? Then what would be wrong about getting the name you asked for
back? The question section serves very little purpose, except possibly
to match queries with their answers at the resolver (client).

I haven't read the RFCs that relate to this (not even sure if there
are any, but I am sure others here know about that), but it would make
sense to get back what you asked for, not what the name server found,
if the latter is a wildcard RR.
