A century ago, there was a large fire in a town somewhere on the east
coast.  Fire departments showed up from all over to help put out the
fire.  The lake was a bit far, so the engines lined up so that their
hoses would stretch from the lake to the town.

That was when they discovered that they had each individually and
sometimes creatively had fittings made that worked with their own
lines - AND NO OTHERS.  And so the town burned to the ground.
