I assume that you meant to ask how long it takes before all DNS
servers on the Internet return proper data for your zone.

How long is a piece of string? It depends on whether it's a newly
registered domain or an update, and what kind of update. If you change
the authorative name servers, it depends on the TTL in whatever TLD
you are under. For .com/.net/.org I generally expect propagation of a
new domain to take some 36-48 hours - this from experience with
registering quite a few of them. Same for changes to the authorative
name sever records, except that caches may increase this with whatever
TTL the TLD has.

If you change your own DNS, it takes as long as the TTL in your zone
states before the first layer name servers are updated (OK, blame me
if you want to, I don't know the technical term). There may be caching
servers though, so doubling your TTL is not a bad idea.

All in all, it depends on many factors, not least what you are trying
to do.
