But your theory makes sense.

No, I think we know.  Here's my BIND 9.2.0rc1 name server, dumping
part of a test zone:

$TTL 600        ; 10 minutes
ns1                     A       192.168.0.1
                        A       192.168.0.2

It seems to use leading whitespace whenever it can.
