As I said an interesting mental exercise, don't try it at home.

I think you just have to bite the bullet and update the various
references.

Possibly if B is just returning a web server address you could,
forget B, do the magic in your HTTP proxy, and keep your DNS
configuration nice and clean.

The previous assumed that "if B is unable to resolv" means "B is
dead", not "B returns NXDOMAIN", which looks like a resolution
of a sort to me.
