The serial number is a monotonically increasing 32 bit number
using serial space arithmetic. Encoding the date as
YYYYMMDD is a way of generating a monotonically increasing
series of numbers. If you use YYYYMMDDVV you can have 100
changes per day and still fit into the 32 bits available.
Slave can be configured to transfer from multiple sources
some of which may be lagging in their zone transfers from
its masters. The slave uses serial space arithmetic to work
out from which of the masters it should transfer the zone,
i.e. the ones with a serial number that is greater than it
currently has.
