I'd say you're very much on the right track, as it's returning
SERVFAIL responses for RRs that don't exist:

; <<>> DiG 8.2 <<>> @ns.online.no. ttyl.com. cname
; (1 server found)
;; res options: init recurs defnam dnsrch
;; got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: SERVFAIL, id: 6
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 0, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0
;; QUERY SECTION:
;; ttyl.com, type = CNAME, class = IN

;; Total query time: 83 msec
;; FROM: labatts to SERVER: ns.online.no. 193.212.1.10
;; WHEN: Fri Sep 21 12:15:41 2001
;; MSG SIZE sent: 26 rcvd: 26

This is a classic symptom of a sytax error in the zone file. The
administrators of ns.online.no should check their logs, fix the
error and reload the zone.

james
