One nameserver with two names

Hi,

I want to set up my "shared" nameserver so that it can be accessed from two
names (e.g. ns.fred.com and ns.john.com). From the archives it seems that
the nameserver itself doesn't really care about its own name. This suggests
that I just need to add the records for ns in the records for fred.com and
john.com in their relevant nameservers (ns.fred.com and ns.john.com) and
everything should be ok......? Problem is, this doesn't seem to work.

Can anyone give me some pointers?
