Thanks for the suggestions I received in private and on the list about the
problem we experienced.

We got the problem resolved.  There was no poisoning or compromise.  To be
brief, internally we resolve a domain that owned publicly.  One of our
technicians broke the zone file and it consequently wouldn't load on that
box.  So, when that box couldn't resolve the domain itself, it started
asking the 2 proper authorities, one of which was the dns whose admin
complained to me.  Had I done a little more research at the start, I
could've resolved this more easily.  But now I know.  :-)
