Long hostname on IRC

I saw somebody on IRC using a long hostname on his
info.
Does anybody know how to do it ?
I have a Linux as gateway (Bind 9.2 installed).
I want my client is using something else as their
hostname rather then using my public IP address ?, it
scares me.
