But since he has an MX record, it shouldn't need to search for the A
record.

That section only deals with processing the $[ ... $] operator in a rewrite
rule, to replace a name with its canonical name.  I don't think it has
anything to do with the "Sender domain must resolve" error (the page
describing this operator says that if the DNS lookup fails, the original
name is simply copied as is).
