Okay is "named" running (ps -ef | grep named), if not look for
errors in /var/log/messages (or try starting named
"/etc/init.d/named start").

If it is running, what is in "/etc/resolv.conf" as this is where
"dig" looks for the default name server.

You can bypass /etc/resolv.conf with "dig @127.0.0.1 linux.bogus
any" just to check the server is running.
