When you manually try "dig" the query will come from a port
above 1023 to port 53 on the remote servers.

BIND 9 also defaults to this behaviour, no idea on BIND 8 (who
would run that? but older versions of BIND would both raise and
answer queries from port 53).

So it maybe your router stopping you "investigating" the
problem, but probably isn't the problem itself.

Can you successfuly "dig @209.246.126.109 demon.co.uk ns"
manually, or any other external DNS request with dig?
