I'm sure some changes could, but if it is pure a named.conf
change, can't you give us a hint on what you changed?

Maybe switching on/off recursion might have an impact, but hard
to see how something non-obvious could make such a big
difference. You sure they haven't gone DNSEC or IPv6 without
telling you? ;-)
