BIND 9.2.3rc2 brings entire machine down

try:

     echo 300 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_keepalive_time

If the problem is entries timing out of a NAT table on the router, the 
above should help.

While I've personally never seen BIND do what you say it's doing, have 
you tried 9.2.3rc4?
