dig 8.3 doesn't support +trace -- have you snipped the error message?

% dig cnn.com. +trace
; *** Invalid option: trace

; <<>> DiG 8.3 <<>> cnn.com. +trace 

Try the dig that comes with BIND 9.2.3, which you're running.
